Background to Awards

The Anti-Poverty Awards were started in 2004 by St David’s, a Uniting Church located in Canterbury, in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. St David’s support and development of the Anti-Poverty Awards recognised that vital work of caring and compassion is carried out by people of all faith backgrounds and people without a faith background.

The driving force behind the Awards has been Adrian Pyle.  Adrian is the Director of the Mission Participation Resource Unit of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania. He is also Chair of Connections UnitingCare.

In 2009 the Awards moved to be a program managed by Connections UnitingCare with support from sponsors and supporters and in collaboration with other community groups.
