Finding Solutions

Finding Solutions is a mediation and diversionary service for adolescents and their families where the young person is at risk of being placed in the out- of- home care system because of family conflict.

Finding Solutions attempts to stabilise the young person and their environment with the aim of preventing them from becoming homeless or involved with the Department of Human Service's Child Protection Service (CPS) again in the future.

Connections provides the Finding Solutions Program in the southern metropolitan region in collaboration with the Salvation Army's Peninsula Youth and Family Services (PYFS).

People who can access the service

Young people between the ages of 12 and 18 years and their families who live in the southern metropolitan region who are referred to the CPS.

How Finding Solutions works

Young people notified to the CPS are assessed as to whether the young person is sufficiently at risk to warrant the ongoing involvement of the CPS.

If the CPS assessment is that the young person is not exposed to a level of risk that warrants their ongoing involvement, they may ask the young person's parent if they wish to be referred with their child to Finding Solutions.

If the parents wish to be referred to Finding Solutions, workers contact the parents and the young person to set up meetings separately and together.

During these meetings workers will listen to the different points of view of the parents and young people and assist them to identify issues that are contributing to conflict within the family.

Finding Solutions also conducts a holistic assessment of factors that may contribute to the young person's problematic behaviour. This can include consultation with schools, other community welfare agencies and government organisations.

Following this assessment, Finding Solutions works with the young person, their family as well as other community organisations, such as schools, to stabilise the young person so that they remain connected with their family, school and community.

How clients can benefit from the service

Young people referred to Finding Solutions can benefit from more stable lives that may result in preventing homelessness, remaining at school and developing enhanced relationships with their family and the community.

How this service benefits the community

Finding Solutions works to stabilise young people and their environment with the aim of preventing them from becoming homeless, disconnected from their family or missing out on educational and other opportunities that could allow them to fulfil their potential as members of the community.
