About Clean Slate

Clean Slate is an early intervention and diversionary program for offenders aged between 14-18 years.

Young people are referred to Clean Slate from the Juvenile Justice System with the aim of preventing them from further offending. Their case before the Children's Court is adjourned while they participate in Clean Slate and the Magistrate takes into account their progress when he/she determines the consequence for their offence.

People who can access the service

Young people who are first time offenders attending the Children's Court in Frankston, Dandenong or Melbourne.

Young people can refer themselves, be referred by their lawyer or the Court.

How Clean Slate works

Clean Slate Youth Workers run four weekly group sessions for young people. These sessions are based on cognitive-behavioural work such as ‘group work' to change attitudes to criminality with challenging physical exercise and cultural activities.

The groups challenge the young people's behaviour by training them to:
  • Set goals for their life after completing Clean Slate
  • Reflect on the consequences of their offending on themselves, their families and the community
  • Consider alternatives to harmful substance use
  • Learn valuable communication, decision-making and problem solving skills

How clients can benefit from the service

In the short term, Magistrate's may look favourably on a young person's involvement with Clean Slate when considering the consequence of their offending.

Young people can also develop a more positive outlook on their future.
