Working Together

The overall aim of the program is to enhance parent and staff skills in managing issues arising from children experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The program also focuses on developing the skills of early childhood service staff by providing 1:1 support, consultation, modelling and staff training.

Working Together provides specially tailored groups run for parents, service staff and children.

Working Together operates in the eastern Melbourne municipalities of Knox, Yarra Ranges and Maroondah. The program also works with children attending kindergartens and childcare centres managed by Connections.

People who can access the service

The following people are eligible to access Working Together:
  • Parents who have children aged between 2-6 years of age who attend Kindergartens, Childcare Centres, Occasional Care or Family Day Care and are experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Live in the eastern Melbourne metropolitan municipalities of Knox, Yarra Ranges or Maroondah, or
  • Attend Kindergartens or Childcare Centres managed by Connections

How Working Together works

Working Together is a unique program in Victoria because our specialist staff work simultaneously with the child, their parents and early childhood service staff to provide a consistent approach, address the cause of the child's difficulties and devise effective solutions for the child.

Working Together does not use a standardised or formularised model to assist children, their parents and staff from early childhood centres. It tailors support according to the needs of the family and the early childhood centre.

How clients can benefit from the service

Research shows that positive educational experiences in early childhood have a significant impact on a child's development and the opportunities and quality of life they may experience in later life.

Working Together's unique model has many benefits for young children, families and the community. These include:

    Children:
  • Preventing exclusion from vital early childhood services
  • Improved developmental outcomes
    Families:
  • Improved parenting skills and family relationships
  • Increased opportunity to access community services such as kindergarten and child care

How this service benefits the community

  • Enhanced early childhood service staff skills and service functioning
  • Prevention and/or reduction of social, emotional and behavioural problems in adolescence and adulthood
