ANTI-POVERTY AWARDS
The Connections UnitingCare Anti-Poverty Awards recognise that there are many young people in Australia who are working towards the eradication of poverty locally, nationally or internationally.
These awards aim to recognise and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of individuals and schools across Australia who demonstrate a deep understanding of the causes and effects of poverty.

Individual Award
The Connections UnitingCare Anti-Poverty Awards recognise young Australians between the ages of 16 and 30.
One Award recipient will receive a grant up to the value of $4000 to continue their work. Encouragement Awards up to the value of $1000 are also offered.
What do the awards aim to do?
» Recognise, support, encourage and link young people who are making a contribution to the eradication of poverty.
» Increase public awareness of the causes and consequences of poverty within our local community, throughout Australia and the world.
» Stimulate discussion, activity and specific actions to deal with poverty related issues.

School Award, presented by Jinta Sport
The School Award, presented by Jinta Sport recognises that there are many schools in Australia who have a strong commitment to giving their students a greater understanding of poverty by encouraging them to initiate and participate in creative and innovative school-based projects that work towards the eradication of poverty locally, nationally and internationally.
This Award recognises that the many activities and projects undertaken by students in schools across Australia contribute significantly to the wider community’s understanding of poverty and its causes.
What is the Award?
One recipient (one school) will receive a Jinta Sport pack to the value of $2500. The pack will include a range of Jinta Sport fairtrade soccer balls, netballs, rugby union, cricket and volleyballs, t-shirts and merchandise. The recipient will also include a special School Award certificate, a trophy and a trip for two representatives to the presentation ceremony in Melbourne in October.
The Award aims to:
» Promote and recognise the work of students and schools who are working towards making a lasting difference towards the eradication of poverty.
» Encourage and support the long-term sustainability of projects undertaken by schools and any future projects.
» Stimulate further discussion within the school community about poverty related issues and other activities that the school and its community can undertake to deal with poverty related issues.‘Through this new schools focused initiative it is evident that even more your people will learn about the plight of those less fortunate, and pertinently feel inspired to respond to the challenges they observe. What Sort of Anti-Poverty Work Are We Looking For?
We understand that people do work at all levels and that the terms ‘eradication of poverty’ is open to a broad interpretation. We are prepared to accept nominations based on the broad reading of these terms and without imposing specific definition. By setting firm definitions we may run the risk of discouraging those who have undertaken or intend to undertake (for example) small, innovative projects which have had large impact in their specific context.
The work done by an applicant may have included (but it is not limited to) ongoing work or projects in:
» tackling homelessness,
» mental health support,
» social justice activities,
» education,
» financial literacy and debt reduction,
» cultural awareness,
» building entrepreneurial skills,
» any of these areas in an overseas context.As an additional guiding comment, it is also worth noting the comments of the Award convenor during the 2006 award presentation when he said:
…we are looking to recognise and support young people who say “this is not about me giving the world an answer to poverty. This is about me being willing to dedicate my life to walking humbly with fellow humanity, to taking on board its wisdom and being able to share my wisdom with its suitably ripe and I know it’s ready for sharing.”

Background to Awards
The Anti-Poverty Awards began in 2004 by St David’s Uniting Church (now known as Habitat Uniting Church), located in Canterbury in Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. St David’s support and development of the Anti-Poverty Awards recognise that the vital work of caring and compassion is carried out by people of all faith backgrounds and people without faith background.
The driving force behind the Awards has been Adrian Pyle. Adrian is the Director: Relationships Innovation, Commission for Mission of the Uniting Church in Australia, Synod of Victoria and Tasmania.
In 2009 the Awards moved to be a program managed by Connections UnitingCare with support from sponsors and supporters in collaboration with other community groups.
