School Focussed Youth Service (SFYS) provides assistance to schools and community service providers to help meet the needs of vulnerable young people in a more responsive and coordinated way.
SFYS aims to ensure that schools and community organisations will work more effectively and efficiently together to support students.
People who can access the service
SFYS works with schools and community organisations in the municipalities of Casey and Cardinia. The program focuses on students aged between 10-18 years who are at risk of developing behaviour that may cause interference in their learning, make them vulnerable to self harm and require support and intervention.
How SFYS works
SFYS works to improve the quality and range of support services available to young people aged between 10-18 years of age and their families by:
- Facilitating dialogue between all prospective parties (community welfare organisations, schools, and other local community stakeholders)
- Building trust and positive relationships between schools and community service providers
- Map existing services and other community supports available for young people and promote this information
- Reconfigure existing services as necessary to make best use of the available resources for young people and their families
- Develop long-term strategic plans for the improvement of and integration of available services
- Provide opportunities for reflective practice and the inter-professional development and training necessary for staff to understand integrated service models and improve their work practices
- Collect and collate data to inform ongoing planning and evaluate whether implemented strategies are having desired outcomes for young people
How clients can benefit from the service
Disadvantaged and vulnerable young people who are ‘at risk' are assisted to avoid situations where their learning is negatively affected and where they may develop behaviours that lead to self-harm.
How this service benefits the community
Ensuring that schools, community service organisations and local stakeholders are effectively and efficiently maximising available resources to support disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.
